Maltby Crags School
This school was built to replace a split site, series of Edwardian buildings set on a tight site, along with temporary accommodation. Through consultation with the school and project team, it was decided that the school could be sited on two storeys for the Junior component. This allowed advantage to be taken of the changes in site levels and also minimise the impact of the building footprint on the available site area, maximising available outdoor spaces for pupils.
The design
The late introduction of a large flat roof area meant modifications had to be made to the roof design. A cold rolled truss roof was utilised for all areas other than the halls. Roof lights were incorporated into the Fastbuild design. Large span PRC floor units were used to form the 1st floor area -
Fastbuild has the capability to support very large spans.
Partnering benefits
Structherm worked closely with Balfour Beatty on this and their previous project, also part of the
Rotherham Schools Joint Venture. Balfour Beatty were keen for Structherm to work closely with their architects to modify the design in order to improve cost benefits. On this particular project Structherm were allowed to refine the design based on the architect’s requirements, thus making building works more cost effective. Various workshops were held by the design team throughout the project enhancing the flow of communication.
