Belford Hospital
Key issues
Built in the early 1960’s, the external fabric of the building was showing its age. Previous rendering repairs had failed and the old metal single glazed windows were ill fitting and in need of replacement. The copper roof was perforated and leaking. Water ingress to fabric through walls, windows and roof were the most significant areas of concern.
Options
Various options to refurbish the building were looked at by the client and the Structherm British Board of Agrement approved insulated render EWI system was chosen as it was regarded as being the least disruptive method, providing an enhanced aesthetic finish, improvements in insulation value with a long life expectancy.
Solutions
Structherm’s insulated render EWI system is a system built up of layers: insulant, a skim of polymer modified or lightweight basecoat render, polymer mesh bedded, ba
secoat render and surface finish. The client chose the NSC2A system, which consisted of 60mm Phenolic insulant, HP12 basecoat and the Cortina finish.
The client considered Structherm’s product offer to be backed up by good technical presentations by non-sales orientated technically knowledgeable representatives. The extensive choice of finishes - both colour and types, was also a major factor in choosing the Structherm solution.
Results
The U-value has improved from the original 1.64 to 0.30 w/m²K and the staff have noticed a considerable
improvement in the internal temperatures during the winter.

Testimonial:
“Overall we have been delighted with Structherm’s approach to the entire project from inception to completion. In particular it has been refreshing to observe, at all stages, attention to detail by all operatives, something so often sadly lacking in the construction industry today. Variations as they have arisen have been dealt with sensibly and final costs for the project inclusive of additional instructed works have been maintained within client budget parameters. I would have no hesitation in specifying Structherm for future projects.”
