Pinehurst Estate
Background:
Built in the 1920’s, the properties are of double leaf concrete walls (formed in-situ), leaves tied together with ties built into each leaf. All houses were badly defective and required complete refurbishment.
Challenges:
Of the problems encountered on the Boswell properties, many were of a serious structural nature. All houses suffered varying degrees of detachment to gable walls, most had random cracking and had been periodically badly patched up.
Solution:
To overcome all these problems, the Structherm structural cladding system was seen to be the only solution that would provide all the required improvements. It is the only system capable of providing a clear option to demolition because of its’ structural nature.
The scheme has been developed over a two year period in consultation with the BRE. To address the issues identified, the Structherm system ensures existing walls are protected from moisture penetration and the vapour permeable renders allow the existing walls to dry out.
Result:
U-values improved to 0.33w/m2K, the loadbearing capacity enhanced, the long-term stability of the overall structure improved, whilst adding a high impact resistance. On completion, the properties now have a life expectancy of at least 30 years.
