Industry Issues | Sustainability

Structherm are proud to be at the forefront of the industry by understanding current issues and preparing for future legislation, we provide our clients with the best value solution. We are actively involved in public and private sector work and seek to continuously improve our systems and service.

Sustainability

As a business we take environmental issues seriously and this is central to our work. Sustainability can be defined as ‘ensuring development meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. Sustainable development means:-

  • Reduction of emissions
  • More efficient use of resources
  • Better re-use of waste
  • Increased consideration for people’s health & safety

Sustainable construction or ‘build to last’ means we need to create buildings which shape communities in a way which sustains the environment, generates long-term wealth and enhances the quality of life.

Newbuild
Structherm’s prefabrication and off-site construction methods support sustainability as waste is designed to be kept to a minimum. At Structherm we also aim for lean construction by looking for ways to continuously improve our manufacturing processes. Our strong customer focus and supply chain partnering improve communications throughout the construction process and enables us to provide the best value solution.

Fastbuild has a design life superior to traditional construction and our structural cladding system for a minimum of 30 years.

Life time performance with Fastbuild is excellent, offering comprehensive fire protection, flood resistance, excellent acoustic, air tightness and thermal mass qualities.

Using the thermal mass of a building is an effective and efficient way to maintain a comfortable and stable temperatures, plus it's a low energy solution with reduced environmental impact. The thermal capacity of concrete structures can be utilised to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Compared to air conditioning, Active Fabric Energy Storage (FES) reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50%. About 90% of the environmental impact from buildings is from heating, cooling and lighting, and only about 10% is from the embodied energy used to produce the fabric of the building itself (taken over a 60 year life-cycle).

Refurbishment
Structherm’s external cladding systems are very cost effective methods of re-using or retaining existing components and extending the life of a structure, as well as enabling remedial work in nearly all situations to be carried out whilst people remain in the building.

A typical Structherm refurbishment including new cladding and windows can be demonstrated to reduce fabric heat losses by up to 75%, with ensuing reductions in heating costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

Our interactive environmental committee is constantly working towards improving energy efficiencies in order to reduce our carbon footprint.
